My Denakk'e name is Neggakk'o. It was my late great-grandmother Anna's name and I was told that it's such an old name, that its meaning has been lost. It used to bother me that my Denakk'e name doesn't have a known meaning. Today though, I'm proud to have a name that has survived against all odds. You see, who I am today as an Athabascan person has also survived against the odds. For me to be here today, my ancestors had to survive for time immemorial and one of the harshest climates in the world.

Friday Focus: Troth Yeddha' Forever

As the sun shines ever more brightly, I am finding renewed energy and deep gratitude as we move toward transitioning from winter to spring. I'm excited about all the possibilities that this time of year holds at ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ. The 50th Annual Festival of Native Arts is a student-led celebratory event this week. The theme is "Troth Yeddha' Forever: Our Ways of Life". Everyone is welcome to attend and take part in exciting traditional ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Native activities including, native dancing, language learning, beading, wellness practices, making fish ice cream - called akutaq or vanhgiq (ah-gu-duk or von-guk), and so much more. It is a great time for reflection about where we have come from and where we are headed, as well as the impact these types of activities have on our sense of community, connectedness, and belonging. I humbly share a few personal reflections as examples of the impact Troth Yeddha' campus, activities, and people have had in my life.

ANLC Emmy award-winning producers honored with commemorative gathering

The ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Native Language Center's film "Awake" won a Northwest Regional Emmy through the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences earlier this year. The College of Rural and Community Development celebrated the ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Native Language Center and producer Maggie King for their work on this film.
