Friday Focus: Safe and responsible activities

We have had a whirlwind of activities and events in the past several weeks with even more fun on the horizon as we approach the holidays, finals, and winter break. I hope you will take the opportunity to join one of our upcoming ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ events, bring a friend (or two), and meet new ones! From a Blue and Gold Governor's Cup hockey game (Go Nooks!) to the Diwali Festival of Lights, a ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Yoga Club class, the University Women's Association bazaar, or a community ski swap, this weekend is full of ways to connect and celebrate together. Along with the fun, we will also continue working together to ensure we contribute to a welcoming environment for students, colleagues, and community members.

NW Archivists' 2024: Call for proposals

Northwest Archivists' next annual meeting will be held in Spokane, Washington, from May 8-10, 2024. The program committee is seeking session proposals related to all aspects of archival/library practice, theory or research that is broadly related to the theme "Seeking Balance: Sustainability and Adaptation" through Dec. 8, 2023.

Bakker appointed interim executive director of University Advancement

Theresa Bakker has been appointed as the interim executive director of University Advancement. In this role, she will lead ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ's development, alumni relations, communications and marketing activities. Bakker will start the interim role on Nov. 6 and serve until a permanent candidate is hired.

Friday Focus: Valuing the institution

How do we measure success? When I look at ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ's inspiring vision statement, excellence through transformative experiences, I have the answer (or at least the goal.) We are successful when our students, investors, grantors, donors, and community members have transformative experiences. What is less clear is how to measure this success. The Board of Regents and President Pitney have been working together and with university leaders on what goals and metrics should look like systemwide. That process has caused me to think a lot about how we measure transformative experiences.

Led by the Gardner Institute, a leading national student success non-profit organization, this initiative aims to transform the critical first two years of college education during which students create the foundation of educational success and degree completion.

As I look out across the ÃÛèÖÊÓƵn landscape, there’s no denying a change of season is happening. In this moment, I contemplate the concept of change itself. Change often ushers in a wave of emotions: fear of the unknown, moments of doubt, anticipation for what lies ahead, and sometimes, a sense of loss for what once was. Typically, it's a blend of these emotions and thoughts that color our perception of change. At the Office of Rights, Compliance, and Accountability, we are steadfast in our commitment to embracing change and understanding its implications for our team and the broader campus community.

Amy Bristor to lead Dual Enrollment

Amy Bristor has accepted the position of director of the Office of Dual Enrollment. She began her work with student services, including dual enrollment, in 2000 with Summer Sessions and continued that work at the Community and Technical College working with professional development, outreach, and the Tech Prep program.

Friday Focus: Celebrating Indigenous excellence

This past Monday, Oct. 9, we celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day. A host of events occurred here on Troth Yeddha' campus and across our rural campuses. On Troth Yeddha' campus there was a frybread taco fundraiser put on by the Festival of Native Arts club and events including the Iñu-Yupiaq Dance group, fish skin sewing, and Native games demonstrations. At the Kuskokwim Campus in Bethel there were several events, including hands-on akutaq making, beading, and mask making and a Native foods potluck. At the Northwest Campus in Nome and at the Bristol Bay Campus in Dillingham, Native films were showcased. Commemorating this day allows us Indigenous peoples to celebrate and share with others who we are, including our rich histories and the contemporary lives we live. As associate vice chancellor for rural, community and Native education, I get to work on and applaud Indigenous excellence each and every day.

Friday Focus: Sankalpa at ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ

In the yoga class I attend, our instructor encourages each of us to begin each practice with Sankalpa, a Sanskrit word that is roughly translated into English as intention, or setting an intention. According to most scholarly works, Sanskrit is the oldest language in the world and it is still alive today as one of the official languages of India. I am learning to take the concept of Sankalpa and many of yoga's impactful concepts with me off the mat, and into my daily life. As teachers, we are familiar with lesson plans and learning goals in the classroom. While not a goal itself, sankalpa is a key concept to achieving goals. It is a way to set your mind in the direction you want to go. Unlike a goal that requires specific action, sankalpa flows within us into every action we take.

Van Flein to serve as ORCA executive director

Kaydee Van Flein has accepted the position for the role of executive director of the newly established Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability. As executive director, Van Flein will oversee Clery, Title IX, Title VII, ADA and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act compliance, student accountability and Student CARE team, and misconduct investigations outlined under Board of Regents' Policy (01.02, 01.04. and 09.02).
