Dr. Cheryl Rosa rejoins ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ as attending veterinarian and director of Animal Resource Center

Dr. Cheryl Rosa joined the University of ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Fairbanks on the Troth Yeddha' Campus in her new role as attending veterinarian on July 17. She most recently served as the deputy director of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission in Anchorage where she worked to strengthen Arctic research and the federal government's ties to the State of ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ, Arctic Indigenous groups and international partners.

Friday Focus: The Carnegie Classification®

The Carnegie Classification® is the nation's leading framework for classifying the diverse U.S. institutions of higher education into broadly similar groups based on nationally reported and publicly available institutional data. This classification that was first published in the early 70s is now updated every three years. So far, Carnegie offers one basic classification system that is universally applied to nearly 4,000 U.S. colleges and universities. Based on our 2020 Institutional data, ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ is classified as a Doctoral University with High Research Activity (R2). Close examination of the data reveals that ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ is on the very high end of the R2 class, and with some change in our institutional profile, we can be classified as a Doctoral University with Very High Research (R1).

Uher, Plumb to serve as interim deans

Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education Charlene Stern has announced that Bryan Uher will serve as interim dean of the ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Community and Technical College starting on Aug. 2. Uher, who is currently CRCD's dean, will replace CTC Dean Michele Stalder, who is retiring.

Friday Focus: Looking toward vibrant, lively fall

ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ continues to be bustling and vibrant this summer at the Troth Yeddha' campus. Each morning I've been watching the steady stream of Rural ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Honors Institute students as they make their way from McIntosh Hall to their first classes in the Joseph E. Usibelli Building. That stream culminated with RAHI's amazing graduation ceremony just yesterday, leaving not a dry eye in the house! In addition, the Visual Arts Academy and Summer Music Academy recently concluded their final celebrations. There are also visiting scholars and researchers from around the world, and scores of families and their potential students visiting campus for the first time. In fact, Troth Yeddha' has been more vibrant this summer than it has been for years! And, while we miss the firefighters we often provide housing for, we don't miss the fires!

Friday Focus: Many hands make light (budget) work

This week, I spent a night in Anchorage between meetings at the ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Energy Authority and University of ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Anchorage. Wednesday morning at the hotel I ate a biscuit, egg, cheese and sausage breakfast sandwich. I was reminded that the people will often invoke the saying "you don't want to know how the sausage is made" when discussing the legislative budget process. This made me think about our budget process at ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ and how far from sausage-making it is. For starters, it is something that we not only want you to know about, but encourage you to participate in!

Last week, Governor Dunleavy released the FY24 State of ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Budget, completing the annual budget-setting process. The final state appropriation for UA amounts to just over $308 million. Of this, $152.6 million is destined for ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ.

On-time, on-schedule with Zoom's timer app

Megan Bean named interim director of development

Megan Bean has been named the interim director of development for university advancement. She has served as the associate director of development since summer of 2022. Bean takes over from Morgan Dulian and will serve in a dual capacity as the associate director, until a permanent development director is hired.

Friday Focus: Budget season is here!

Welcome to budget season! When the academic year ends and most students head home for the summer, the ramp-up for fiscal year close-out (and restart) begins. Although you may not see it because this work is often behind the scenes, there is a flurry of activity for fiscal professionals this time of year. If you pass by your fiscal or procurement office and the person there (or online) looks frazzled, thank them for their efforts and help keep them motivated! The deadlines are fast approaching and the pace to keep up means many folks are scheduling their summer vacations around these closing and opening fiscal activities to ensure it all gets done on time. I want to acknowledge this hard work and thank our fiscal staff, leaders, and business office teams for this quiet dedication and thoroughness - your work is critical to our healthy financial operations and helps management at all levels stay "in the know" as part of decision-making for the coming year. Friday Focus: Thank you Policy Committees!

The sun is out and the end of FY23 is nearing! Things are always bustling at the end of each fiscal year as fiscal staff are working round the clock to close out accounts, create budgets for the new fiscal year, and clean up any last-minute financial pieces that support staff, faculty, and students. Meanwhile, most students are on a break exploring what life has to offer while our student athletes enjoy some time off from their busy seasons. Faculty are teaching summer courses, doing community outreach, and conducting cutting-edge research from here at Troth Yeddha' campus to all the way in Antarctica. Administrators and other staff are planning for the upcoming fiscal/academic year and working hard on all of the things that make ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ an amazing university and a place of belonging. With the business of fiscal year-end, I wanted to take a minute and thank all the staff, faculty and students for all you do.

Friday Focus: RCNE planning forward

The University of ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Fairbanks College of Rural and Community Development and the Community and Technical College have been busy working to update their 10-year campus master plan. Board of Regents Policy 05.12.030 requires a CMP for each campus. The 2023 CRCD and CTC campus master planning effort is informed by a shared vision that will guide the development of the two college's campuses and instructional sites over the next decade.
