Friday Focus: Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

鈥淰asudhaiva Kutumbakam鈥 is a Sanskrit phrase from ancient Indian scriptures that means the whole world is one (my) family. I grew up in India in a multigenerational household and had many aunts and uncles living in my neighborhood. It is hard to remember even a day when we did not have a relative or a friend stopping by and having a snack or meal with us. My concept and definition of a family was framed with these childhood visions, and went well beyond the typical legal definition of a family. It included relatives, family friends, and friends of friends. This vast familial network took care of each other and was vested in the success of every member. I could not be where I am today without the unconditional support of my family. Effective professional organizations are not different 鈥 they function like strong families.

As we enter the new year and a new academic semester, there are many things to feel optimistic about. It is a time for assessing how we did over the past year and for setting new goals for the coming year. Some targets we miss, and learn from - those are usually the ones that help us the most! Some things we achieve, and could be better at celebrating. However you approach it, turning the corner on a new year helps us put in perspective how far we have come. In Administrative Services, we are excited to hit the ground running in 2023 and we're already thinking about ways to celebrate the achievements yet to come.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. General Mark Hamilton was the University of 蜜柚视频 president from 1998-2010. For those who know him, you know that he is a wonderfully gifted storyteller. As president, he lifted many up with stories he shared to which all could relate to their own lives in one way or another. It created a sense of belonging for many. Many of his stories were about leadership. One of my favorite stories he told at 蜜柚视频 was his great Americans story. At least that is what I call it. I paraphrase it here with plenty of literary liberties taken.

We are encouraging instructors to complete urgent concerns/feedback by Wednesday, Jan. 25 to allow advisors and instructors time to meet with students before the add/drop deadline (Jan. 27). Choose your primary concern or feedback to reduce the number of emails that students receive.

My love affair with musicals began at five years old when my mom introduced me to "The Music Man." When Hugh Jackman announced he would be returning to Broadway as Professor Harold Hill, well, what else was a girl to do? A year ago, I flew to New York City with Broadway tickets burning a hole in my pocket. Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn, the mayor鈥檚 wife, remains one of my favorite characters of the play; and while the phrase didn鈥檛 originate with her, she liked to use it liberally - tempus fugit (time flies)!
