I'm sure this feeling is shared at all of the ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ, CTC and community campus locations. As part of preparation for this return, the team in Administrative Services is working hard to make campus look great and feel welcoming, continue with construction work during the busy summer season, and improve and test our safety and notification protocols on campus to ensure the Nanook community is well-situated in case of an emergency.

Holly McDonald has been appointed as University Registrar. Holly's relationship with ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ began over 25 years ago as a student. After working as a student employee and finishing her bachelor's degree at ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ, she began working at the Center for Distance Education, now eCampus, in 2001.

Friday Focus: How a chief of staff can help you

Earlier this week the university announced that my working title would change from University of ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Fairbanks executive officer to chief of staff (CoS). This shift has no impact on my role, duties, or direct reports at ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ, but it does make it easier for stakeholders inside and outside the organization to understand what my position does for our ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ community. With the opportunity to write this week's Friday Focus, I want to expand on this shift and provide the campus community with a look inside my role. If stakeholders don't understand what my position does for the university then they may miss an opportunity to benefit from the services I can provide them.

ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ recently submitted our annual operating and capital budget request for FY24 to President Pitney. The President will weigh our needs alongside those of UAA, UAS, the system office, and what she feels is an appropriate request to the governor. ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ is requesting an operating budget increase to support employee compensation increases (to be determined at a UA level), fixed cost increases, and strategic academic, outreach and research initiatives that align with UA’s Goals and Measures and ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ’s Strategic Plan.

Each July, ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ's Northwest Campus partners with the local school district in Nome to offer a unique and transformative experience to incoming K-12 teachers. The course, ED 420 ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Native Education, provides a continuing education opportunity for teachers to learn about the history of education in ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ as it pertains to Indigenous peoples. For over ten years, this enriching experience has provided dozens of new teachers valuable insight into the knowledge and ways of life that have, and continue to, sustain the first peoples of the Bering Straits region.
